South Shore Writers Anthology – Call for Submissions November 15, 2016 – March 15, 2017
Photo of Father Christmas Display, Mahone Bay taken and shared by Vicki Bardon.
An anthology will be published November, 2017 containing stories written by South Shore writers or members of South Shore writing groups and set in South Shore communities (Boutilier’s Point to Lockeport and everywhere between).
The collection of stories will have a common theme: keepsakes or objects or materials that trigger strong, evocative memories (The memories will be the stories, the keepsakes are woven in as triggers for a celebratory or sentimental memory/story).
The keepsakes will be gathered or created and used to create a Father Christmas display similar to those in Mahone Bay in their Father Christmas displays of the past.
South Shore writers anthology
Vicki Bardon of Mahone Bay inspired the idea for this anthology during a conversation with Pat Thomas about Mahone Bay’s Father Christmas displays. She explained that most displays were created by volunteers and made from donated items and materials. Over time staff learned donations of things arrived with wonderful stories and items were considered too dear throw away. As they handed them over they shared the memories, pulling at the heartstrings of volunteers who heard them.
By giving the trims and trinkets away, people honoured their memories and passed them over to touch the hearts of others as part of art – displayed in seasonal tableaus delighting thousands of people. Like magic. The displays generate good feelings of family, belonging, celebration, awe and love. Their artistic and engaging presentation provided a wonderful seasonal experience for thousands of visitors who went to Mahone Bay to take in the displays and activities. We hope they continue that tradition and hope to capture that magic in the anthology.
